Do I Have Acid Reflux or Bile Reflux?

There is a sphincter where the stomach meets the small intestine that normally keeps both food and bile from flowing back into the stomach.

When that sphincter becomes more relaxed due to different causes – most often inflammation – both digesting food and bile can back up into the stomach.

Another thing that can happen is that the esophageal sphincter is too relaxed, allowing bile and/or acid to flow up into the esophagus, causing a bitter taste sensation.

Bile won’t reflux alone; there will always be stomach acid with it because it has to pass through the stomach.

Bile reflux is not uncommon after gallbladder surgery, and is often associated with symptoms like heartburn and nausea. But it’s important to note, bile reflux also happens among people with gallbladder issues, not just after gallbladder removal.

So… Do You Have Acid Reflux or Gallbladder Problems?

Gallbladder pain is usually felt in the upper right abdomen, where your gallbladder and liver are located, while acid reflux pain is typically felt in the chest, sometimes radiating to the throat.

But remember - they can also occur together.

Which means, besides a bitter taste, bile reflux can also manifest as chest discomfort, belching, nausea, and a burning sensation in the throat.

However, the triggers for these two types of pain are usually different.

Gallbladder issues are usually triggered by fatty meals, while acid reflux can be triggered by various foods like citrus, spicy food, coffee, and alcohol. Processed foods like breads and pasta can also trigger heartburn.

If you are experiencing symptoms you believe could be gallbladder problems, it would be a good idea to take it seriously and make dietary and lifestyle changes before you experience an acute attack.

Changing your eating habits and taking the right supplements are two ways to work with gallbladder pain – they are each helpful by themselves, but they work much more quickly and effectively when you do them both together.
