Spirulina Supplement: Nutrition, Benefits, And Everything In Between

Pungent, earthy, sulphury – words you might not want to describe the food you’re eating. That’s spirulina. After all, it’s an alga. But whatever it lacks in taste, it makes up for in nutrition. Spirulina is the best protein source among all vegetables. This percentage translates into approximately four gms of protein per TBSP. And perhaps more importantly, it contains all the essential amino acids. e. Enzymes

Spirulina Supplement Dosage

There is no standard spirulina dosage. The amount and form (powder, capsule, or tablet) used in studies also varies greatly. Therefore, it’s good that even high amounts of the supplement are considered safe (except if you have autoimmune disorders or a genetic disorder called PKU).

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the daily spirulina dosage is between 2,000 to 3,000 mg. That dosage is divided into as many as six intakes daily. This amount can still be different depending on your weight. If we were to approximate the maximum spirulina dosage based on its C-phycocyanin content and the weight of the person taking it, it would be as follows:

  • 10.9 g for someone weighing 150 lbs
  • 14.5 g for someone weighing 200 lbs
  • 18.2 g for someone weighing 250 lbs
For various health conditions, here are the approximate spirulina supplement dosages recommended:
  • 1-8 g daily to lower cholesterol
  • 2-7.5 g daily for muscle performance
  • 2 g daily for glucose control
  • 3.5-4.5 g daily for blood pressure
  • 4.5 g daily for patients with fatty liver
  • There is no exact amount recommended for those undergoing stem cell treatments. However, in studies with animal models, spirulina accounts for 0.1% of their total diet.

Like any other food or supplement, different brands have different qualities. Not all spirulina supplements are created equal. Getting low-quality supplements may cause digestive distress. Or worse, cheap spirulina supplements may be contaminated with bacteria, heavy metals, or other pollutants.
